How can we work together to design the city bridge of the future?

Traditionally, innovation has been centrally invested, which is no longer acceptable in a world where configurability and flexibility are key factors for success. Here's how the Police Department has invested innovation organization-wide.

Challenge

Rotterdam’s new City Bridge will be more than just a connection between two riverbanks. It will be a bridge that contributes to Rotterdam’s future. The challenge was to bring together diverse knowledge, expertise, and perspectives in a short period of time and to come up with innovative ideas that look beyond technology alone.

Our approach

During an intensive hackathon, we brought together nearly 50 participants, including students, architects, engineers, bridge builders, and other experts. Using a structured and creative approach, they worked together on the bridge of the future. By connecting disciplines and making room for new perspectives, an inspiring collaboration emerged that fully integrated mobility, quality of life, nature, and cultural heritage.

Result

By the end of the day, there were seven detailed concepts, each offering its own vision for the new City Bridge as an urban connection. The hackathon not only yielded innovative ideas but also provided a broad foundation for further exploration and development. The energy, creativity, and collaboration made it clear just how much value is created when different areas of expertise work together on a single future challenge.
